Four more days until our little sneak preview contest closes. Only a few people have sent us the correct answer so far, which means that you have good chances to win one of our records if you know (or guess) the answer. It’s pretty difficult, but you can find a hint in the comments that might help you.
Update: The contest is closed, the correct answer is: Giardini di Mirò (original song) and Apparat (remix). Tim from Berlin is the lucky winner. Congratulations!
Props to Andrea, Rene, Alexander, Chris and Marcus (who all knew the answer). Thanks to everyone else who participated. A new contest is on the way, so stayed tuned.

I’ve just read on the prefix blog that Merge is offering free MP3 files for everyone who purchases the vinyl version of The Clientele’s new album.
Vinyl purists who pick up a copy of The Clientele’s newest LP, Strange Geometry, will receive a CD insert inside the LP with a coupon entitling the bearer to a free one-time download of the full album, in digital mp3 format, from the cavernous electronic vaults of Merge Inc.
We often thought about something like this here at 2nd rec, because personally (from a customer’s point of view) we would love that. Christophe and I definitely prefer vinyl, but there are often situations where a digital format comes in pretty handy (it’s such a pain in the ass to carry a vinyl-walkman + record case with you all the time!).
We haven’t done it yet, because there are some technical issues to be resolved first, and furthermore the German royalty collection society isn’t very flexible when it comes to ideas like this (we would have to pay mechanical royalties for two copies instead of one and i guess there would be some tedious paperwork involved). But maybe we can figure out some solution for our upcoming releases.
Would you be interested in this? Would you make use of such an offer?

Every Thursday we will present one MP3 from our catalog (additionally to the ones you can find on the release pages on our website). These MP3s are only available on our server for a week, after that they are gone and will be replaced by another one. This week:
Tellaro “Urge In A Funeral” (MP3, 3.6 MB) (removed)
I am not sure why I picked this song from the new Tellaro album. It’s probably not one of those songs that grab you immediately. I guess it’s something you would call a “grower”, but that may applies for pretty much the whole record.
Like many other Tellaro songs “Urge In A Funeral” is very sparsely instrumented, yet full of little details. Listen closely to the song, preferably with headphones, and you know what I am talking about. Besides the strumming guitars, the akward drumcomputer rhythm and Francesco’s evocative vocals, you can hear some hidden piano notes, strange flute sounds, triangles/bells and subtle buzzing under the surface. Enjoy!
Another free MP3 from “Setback On The Right Track” can be found here. If you like what you hear, you can purchase more songs on iTunes or buy the CD/LP from sonicane.

I’ve found some more photos from Amanda’s current European tour on flickr. I don’t know where the photos were taken. France? Italy? The club looks nice…
Hey Amanda: every show you play, every word you say, every move you make, every step you take, we’ll be watching you!

Months ago I’ve ordered “Mix Tape”, a book edited by Mr. Thurston Moore about… well, i guess you’ve figured it out. I almost forgot about it, so it was a nice surprise when i’ve found it in the mailbox today. The book is basically a collection of images, essays and short stories about mix tapes. People like Mike Watt, Jim O’Rourke, Richard Kern, Slim Moon (Kill Rock Stars), Dj Spooky, Glen E. Friedmann, Rita Ackermann, Jutta Koether and other buddies of Thurston Moore present a mix tape they’ve made or received.
Great book, highly recommended for everybody who’s interested in this cultural phenomenon.

I would love this as a poster.
These images are taken from Project C-90, an amazing resource for recordable cassettes, which I always love to vist.
I don’t use tapes anymore, but there was a time (looong ago) when I was pretty much addicted to them. Though price (I needed lots of tapes) and quality were important criterions, the design was always crucial to me.
For a long time my cassette of choice was the TDK SA 90. It was quite cheap and it sounded OK. And I pretty much liked the design: black with golden letters, classic typeface, a huge window so you could see the reels, everything rectangular. But then they started to redesign, added different fonts, more colours and finally they introduced really ugly shapes… Have a look at the decline of the SA 90:

What is/was your favourite tape model?

Last wednesday the complete 2nd rec board of directors went out to have a comfy soirée at the Weltbühne Hamburg, enjoying Hauschka and his prepared piano (go to his or his label’s website to listen to some of his wonderful songs). Adam Butler was playing there as well, but the crowd was too loud so we had to leave the place.

Stacs of Stamina, who appeared on a 10″ with Pilot Balloon (2ND013), are back with a new, awesome full-length album on Werk. They call it Eurocrunk, because electrohiphopwithcrazy8bitgameboysounds doesn’t sound catchy enough. Check out their video for “Roll” featuring Earz. If you like what you hear, you can order the LP (or CD) from our online shop.
