Silk-screening in Leipzig

About three weeks ago I’ve been in Leipzig to print the covers of “North Atlantic Treaty Of Love, Part 2″, the upcoming 12″ by Giardini di Mirò. It took us - Tobi and Christopher (the designers of the beautiful artwork) and me - two days to silk-screen all the sleeves. 600 cardboard sheets, printed on both sides, some even with two colours… that’s about 1500 single print processes. We even used different colour combinations to make the limited edition even more special. There were no more than 150 covers with the same colours.

It’s not a mistake that I used past tense in the last sentence. Unfortunately we’ve had a “little” accident with the elevator. The skid with the paper moved over the edge of the plattform and safty breaks didn’t work. See the results on our flickr-page.

We couldn’t rescue a single sheet. All of them have been destroyed when the elevator was repaired. We’re not sure at the moment, if we can do more silk-screened covers or if we have to do them with regular offset printing. Maybe a very, very limited special edition of the 12″ will come with a silk-screened cover, while the rest will come in an ordinarily printed sleeve. We’ll decide in the next few days.

The release of the record however is not in danger. The 12″ will be out on June 9th. On the same day we’ll also release a CD with all 8 songs from both EPs.
