Since the release of their 2003 album „Punk … not Diet!“ Italian post rock heroes Giardini di Mirò have graced more than 100 European stages, leaving little time or leisure for a brand new album. Nevertheless, the band’s heads and minds continued to brim with new ideas: taking short breaks in-between their extensive tours, GdM snatched a few days here and there to record a number of songs created between sound check and motorway.
Hungry for new ideas and relieved of any pressure to create an entire, coherent album, Giardini di Mirò went on to record several tracks, bit by bit, all sparkling with a range of subtly mesmerising new facets of Giardini di Mirò’s shimmering sound cosmos. Although avid fans are likely to make out the band’s trademark sound in each of the four new tracks of “North Atlantic Treaty Of Love”, this release holds more than a few surprises.
„Othello“, for example, juxtaposes heart-rending harmonies with 4/4 kick drums and a sharply grooving synth bass. A track to break new ground – with more than just its snappy beats: for the very first time the band’s guitarist, Jukka Reverberi, performs the lead vocals.
“Little Cesar” marks yet another premiere: for this song, Giardini di Mirò asked a bona fide MC (Siaz of Zucchini Drive/Cavemen Speak) to take the mic. An odd combination on paper – GdM’s melodious instrumentals plus rap passages – this meeting of minds is a musical marriage made in heaven.
Those of you who made it to one of the recent Giardini di Mirò shows, will remember their stunning cover version of Smog’s „Blood Red Bird“ – the calming finale to many overwhelming concerts.
“The Perfect Trick”, on the other hand, has still to see its live debut. This formidable instrumental, concluding the first half of “North Atlantic Treaty Of Love”, was originally written for a film soundtrack.
With their remix album „The Academic Rise Of Falling Drifters“ (2ND008) GdM already proved that they are not averse to external manipulation by esteemed colleagues. In this spirit, four remixes of tracks originally released on “Punk … not Diet!” by the likes of Alias, Apparat, Hood and The Boats complete this CD.
